In the wake of Omarosa’s book critical of Trump, and yet another cannonade of objection and discreditation from the White House (that falls short of impressing anyone but his usual base of lemmings).. what does Trump do? He pulls the security clearance from former CIA director, John O. Brennan for quite obvious retribution toward the ex-director’s freedom-of-speech admonishments of the President. Our Dear Leader has truly got a political death wish; it’s amazing how often he shoots himself in the foot.
Trump’s got the press united against him for his constant badgering to the public about the press being an enemy of the state. Now he’s managed to unite the former intel leaders (leadership going back some 30 years) signing letters in opposition to Trump’s removing security clearances as political retribution for them exerting their freedom of speech.
United Intelligence of America
In an amazing display of unity the former intel chiefs have continued to hammer away with their discontent over Trump.. and Trump’s inappropriate use (or rather his complete abuse) of his power in recklessly removing Brennan’s security clearance, and likely planning to do more. Brennan himself is seeming to be planning to sue the President, not to regain his own clearance but rather to prevent Trump from doing it to others, calling the action of the President as a security and safety threat to the nation. In the meantime, other former intel chiefs have been lining up to volunteer to (or dare) Trump to remove their security clearances.. proclaiming a solidarity in defiance to the action against Brennan.
What “They” Are Saying
It’s been a bit interesting as I wander through my “fave” conservative blogs reading the posts pertaining to all this. Most of these people are confusing the issue with the outcry from the former intel chiefs and the media as being some challenge to the presidential power to do this at all. As usual their thinking is some one dimensional defense of their leader. Then there’s those comments that suddenly pop up… “Why do ex-intel people still have their clearances anyway” Duh.
Also available for Trump supporters is to assign the Trump “list of enemies” as being a cleaning out of all the liberal “deep state” evil-doers. That somehow contained on this list were elements who started the Mueller investigation… the ignoring of Hillary’s 30,000 emails and Benghazi responsibilities (which it’s “so obvious” to the Trump supporters that she is guilty), Obama’s ObamaCare, the other shooter on the grassy knoll, yada, yada.
But the better “shock” to their system is that, tradition or not, “…these ex-intel people are making money having clearances when they leave office???”. You can just sense the “Oh those damned liberal elitists!”… in spite of the fact that most these “ex” folks have been republicans. So without doing their homework they just are very willing to accept the fact that “millions are being made”. In fact, there is a percentage of these folks who do end up with some salary advantage.. although here’s a report from the Huffington Post HERE on just this subject.
Bottom line… and it makes perfect sense… security clearances from ex-intel people are usually desired by civilian contractors who do business with the government under contracts. The Trump supporters must be assuming that retaining a security clearance means anyone can just stroll into the CIA and read the files on a whim… which obviously is NOT the case. Having a security clearance does not ignore the value of a “need to know”. More importantly.. no one is “making millions” re-cycling their security clearance.
What Brennan Said…
So that leaves what Brennan has said himself.. that Trump’s actions as President as it related to the last summit with Putin, might be interpreted as “nothing short of treasonous”. People generally lock on to that word for any number of political reasons, and as it relates to a sitting president, is just a skip away from “reason for impeachment”.
This was reported by CNN HERE….
Washington (CNN)Former US intelligence chiefs expressed astonishment and condemnation Monday in response to President Donald Trump’s comments at Monday’s news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with former CIA Director John Brennan calling the US President’s performance “nothing short of treasonous.”
Following his one-on-one meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, Trump declined to endorse the US intelligence community’s assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 election over Putin’s denial, saying the Russian President was “extremely strong and powerful” in his denial.
“Donald Trump’s press conference performance in Helsinki rises to & exceeds the threshold of ‘high crimes & misdemeanors.’ It was nothing short of treasonous,” Brennan, a frequent critic of Trump who served as CIA chief from 2013 through January 2017, tweeted during the event. “Not only were Trump’s comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. Republican Patriots: Where are you???”
Honestly, at that moment I also thought Trump was selling out the country and I still think that to this day. Perhaps even more so since the Mueller investigation seems to be closing in toward some collusion (which likely will lead to somewhere) and more recently the release of Craig Ungar’s book, House of Trump, House of Putin: How Vladimir Putin and the Russian Mafia Helped Put Donald Trump in the White House, where the author details names and places and Russian mafia involvement in the Trump of the 1980’s alleged money laundering, and them getting Trump out of 4 billion dollars in debt. Quite obviously that’s only my opinion on Trump’s Russian connection until proven otherwise. But if it walks like a duck……..
But here’s the thing for me personally… I have often stated that I don’t challenge Trump’s patriotism and it’s this blog’s purpose to challenge his psych behavior and gross inability to be a president. Each and every day he proves his maladjustment. I don’t think he was intentionally being “treasonous” at all at the summit, as Brennan alleges. I do believe his actions could be interpreted as being treasonous… but not necessarily intentionally so. IF everything in that book is accurate, and IF Mueller finds illegal activity, I honestly feel somehow Trump mentally thinks he has done nothing wrong… or sense that his is the “better” way to get things done. I think in his present position that he thinks he is above the law.. so however he gets things done is ok.. and if there’s a legal problem.. well, he’s now the President and can pardon himself and his family if need be… so big deal. For the most part, he’s right.
Right now this guy is very similar to Nicholson’s character in A Few Good Men (I made that earlier post referencing that movie very intentionally other than trying to get some laughs). He’s just as arrogant with power and considers himself above the law. Trump will reach a point where some reporter will ask some question with a measure of pressure (maybe from CNN’s John Acosta).. and he will go off and just answer it his own way, and the world’s opinion be damned; after all, he’s the President!
Back to Brennan. I admire the man.. both in and out of his last position. I am liking him more now because he has personally drawn the line with Trump.. and it looks like he’s ready to butt heads. While Trump tends to like that, you gotta assume Trump’s average day is just filled with chaos and pressure. As things teeter more on the edge members of his administration are going to start thinking where they want to be when the music stops.. and it’s VERY possible their trails will lead to Mueller’s office to guard their careers. Not everyone of course.. but all it takes are a couple. Brennan’s efforts are going to add to Trump’s pressure and it will be effective simply because Brennan is now untouchable to Trump’s threats. Likely there will no tell-all book from Brennan; he’s way too much the intel professional for that.. plus, there’s no time. Brennan is a true patriot who once served with distinction and now wants to fight for the country.
You think Brennan and the ex’s on the infamous enemies list, and the media, will form a loose informal alliance where they might be afforded a little more media coverage for interviews? Yep. Each time any of those folks says something in a speech, interviews in the press, acts as a media talking head… yep. 60, or 75, or whatever the number of the letter signatories is.. that’s a lot of folks to be afforded media coverage.
It’s only going to get worse for him (Trump).. and the longer he stays in office the worse it will be for America.
